The Alaska Department of Fish & Game and the Alaska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society are hosting a three-day electrofishing course in Juneau from May 27-29 and in Fairbanks from June 9-11. Other locations are still being planned in southcentral Alaska. The in-class portion of the course will cover the theory, application, and safety of backpack electrofishing through PowerPoint lectures, gear demos, and laboratory exercises. A local field trip will familiarize students with standard equipment, protocols, electrofishing techniques, fish identification, and data collection. A follow-up classroom day will go over data organization, reporting, Anadromous Waters Cataloging, and fish identification. The course is required for electrofishing projects permitted by ADF&G’s Aquatic Resource Permits. Registration is open. Participants are encouraged to bring the backpack electrofisher and dipnets they will be using in the field to this class. Waders will be required for the field trip.
